Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn is a living entity that defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina’s door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.
Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn… and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it’s all in the day’s work for an Innkeeper…
I’m pretty much a die-hard fan of husband-and-wife author team Ilona Andrews—I see that name on the cover of a book, and I’m sold. So when their novel, Sweep in Peace, second in the Innkeeper Chronicles series, came out in November, I bought it ASAP and read it soon afterward. Since then, I’ve read it and the first book again and even started on the chapters the authors have released on their website.
There are so many things I love about this series. It might not be quite as action-packed as Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, but it’s definitely got its fair share of adrenaline-charged goodness, and this book lives up to its predecessor in this sense. Even better, it’s chock full of intrigue, with political wheeling and dealing, intergalactic cultural issues, a mysterious thief, and more at stake than the characters initially realize.
The main character, Dina DeMille, really powers the story, and she’s a combination of soft-hearted yet badass. She runs an inn that has something like a mind of its own and magical properties even she may not know the extent of. A tragedy in her past and the need to find answers for it has her venturing farther out than the usual Innkeeper might. She’s also missing the hot neighbor she’d started to get to know in the first book in the series, who has left her to seek out adventure and learn about his heritage and true nature.
Dina’s struggling to get by, but once her inn is chosen for an important Arbitration that could determine the future of an entire planet, she finds herself with the opportunity to shine—or crash and burn—in the Innkeeper world, where you live or die by your reputation for keeping your guests safe and satisfied.
Without revealing too much of what goes on in the story, I can say that it’s one that’s got all the elements for a fun, fantastic read. You’ve got alien races with intriguing powers (and weaknesses), tortured dark knights holding on to hope, hilarious and endearing yet still murderously dangerous characters who are at each other’s throats much of the time, and through it all, a heroine who cares deeply about those she is responsible for but also has the spine to cut through their BS when it’s needed most.
Toss in a little attempted murder, and you get a book with so much win, it’s definitely a must-read if you’re a fan of this author or the genre; however, while Sweep in Peace can be read as a standalone, I’d still recommend reading book 1 so as to better appreciate some of the supporting characters who make appearances in this novel.
