One of the things that was a game changer for me last year was Kindle Unlimited. It let me discover all sorts of new authors and read stories by authors I’d flagged as interesting without breaking the bank, but also knowing that the authors were getting compensated. I also found, to my delight, that a number of Filipino authors had enrolled their books into the program, and I could recommend these reads to those of my friends watching their wallets who happened to be registered with KU as well.

So here are a few authors to watch, if you’ve got a Kindle Unlimited subscription and if you’re curious about Filipino authors or are in the Philippines and looking for more local reads.

1. Ines Bautista-Yao

This author has mastered the sweet surrender to tender feelings with her signature clean romance novels featuring swoon-worthy characters.

About Ines Bautista-Yao

Ines Bautista-Yao is the author of One Crazy Summer, What’s in your Heart, and Only a Kiss. She has also written two short stories, “Flashbacks and Echoes,” which is part of a compilation called All This Wanting and “A Captured Dream,” one of the four short stories in Sola Musica: Love Notes from a Festival.

She is the former editor-in-chief of Candy and K-Zone magazines and a former high school and college English and Literature teacher. She is also a wife and mom and blogs about the many challenges and joys of motherhood. She has recently launched The Author Project, a section in her current blog devoted to the stories in her head.

As Regina finds herself falling hard for Ben, she also finds herself breaking all the rules of best-friendship. Will she give up the love of her life for Lana, or will she finally realize that she deserves her share of the spotlight, too?

2. Bianca Mori

A former workshop classmate of mine, this author has found her niche in romantic suspense, delivering heady feels with a hearty dose of action and intrigue.

About Bianca Mori

Bianca Mori is the author of One Night at the Palace Hotel and Tame The Kitten. She is interested in exploring power in romance and enjoys reading about demimondaines, pin-up girls and Jazz Age personalities and hopes to reinterpret these in her stories. She lives with her family and a hyperactive pug.

Not to get Liam Neeson on your asses, but the fact is that Peyton Riley has a very specific skill set. She’s good at her job and has just gotten off a major project when she crosses paths with the gorgeous snake-in-the-grass calling himself Carson Varis. He’s taken her against her will, but to where, and to what end? She’s got days to figure this out and escape–before her boss finds out where his favorite specialist has disappeared.

Carson Varis has got an eye for art and a mania for professionalism. No one does work-life balance like he does. But a certain fiery redhead has gotten his goals in a twist. He has his employer’s order to fulfill, but can’t get the memory of her body (and her hair, and her deep blue eyes, and oh, that mouth) out of the way. Can he get it together and pull off a job well done?

3. Tara Frejas

I listed Tara Frejas as one of my 5 #romanceclass authors to watch because of the way she draws her audience in and, regardless of their interests, makes her readers care about the things she loves because of the joy she injects into her writing.

About Tara Frejas

Tara Frejas is a cloud-walker who needs caffeine to fuel her travels. When she's not on work mode, she keeps herself busy by weaving her daydreams into stories.
Aside from her obvious love affair with words and persistent muses, Tara is very passionate about being caffeinated, musical theatre, certain genres of music, dancing, dogs, good food, and romancing Norae, her ukelele. She owns a male bunny named Max who sometimes tries to nibble on her writing notes. Scandalized is her second novel after Paper Planes Back Home.
Fun fact: She's a Piscean. Go figure.

4. Jay E. Tria

Another one of my #romanceclass authors to watch, Jay E. Tria delivers on feels like nobody’s business. I was so wrecked over her Playlist trilogy, I marathoned the books, live tweeted as I read, and posted my reviews three days in a row.

About Jay E. Tria

Jay E. Tria writes contemporary Young Adult and New Adult stories about characters that live inside her head, about people she meets and people she wishes to meet. She is a daydreamer, a reader, and a lover of skinny jeans, sneakers, and live gigs. Oh, and adopted cats. She is not a cool kid.

Every breakup has its playlist.

How do you get over a seven-year relationship? 21-year-old Jill is trying to find out. But moving on is a harder job when Kim, her ex-boyfriend, is the lead guitarist of the band, and Jill is the vocalist. Every song they play together feels like slicing open a barely healed tattoo.

Jill’s best friend Miki says she will be out of this gloom soon. Breakups have a probation period, he says. Jill is on the last month of hers and Miki is patiently keeping her company.

But the real silver lining is Shinta. Having a hot Japanese actor friend in times like these is a welcome distraction. This gorgeous celebrity has been defying time zones and distance through the years to be there for Jill. Now he is here, physically present, and together he and Jill go through old lyrics, vivid memories, walks in the rain, and bottles of beer. Together they try to answer the question: what do you do when forever ends?

5. Yeyet Soriano

I don’t understand why this woman gives me credit for helping her kickstart her writing career—when I met her she’d already completed her first novel, which clocked in at 80,000 words! She’s launched three more books since then, with another on the way.

About Yeyet Soriano

Yeyet Soriano has been writing her entire life, first as an angst-ridden teenager, then as a single working woman, then as a married working woman with kids. Though the themes of her written works have changed over the years, she held on to one truth—she needed to write to keep the voices in her head at bay.

Her first foray into self-publishing was when she collaborated with some of her high school friends on a book in 2011, where one of the mini books was entitled “Yeyet,” and some of her nonfiction and fiction works were included. The book was Life in the Middle, A Discovery, and it is being distributed in print by Central Books.

She just self-published Turning Points, her first e-book novel through Buqo, as part of the #JustWritePH writing class. It is included in the #JustWritePH—For Redemption bundle, but will also soon be released as a stand-alone novel in e-book format.

She has also a novella coming out soon from the #StrangeLit workshop (entitled In My Dreams, part of the Darkest Dreams bundle) and is now working on her #HeistClub story. Her target is to have three stories completed and published this year.

Her day job is that of an IT manager for the Asia-Pacific region for a multinational corporation. She is married to a man who reads only to fall asleep, and they have three wonderful kids—two of whom love to read and one, only starting to learn to read.

Seconds before her plane crashed, Sandy Garcia, a forty-something working mother of three, wished she had never met and married her husband. When she recovered consciousness, she realized her wish had been granted. She woke up to a world where she was a popular and multi-awarded theater actress / singer  / dancer / published author / professional photographer.

Alex Marquez was a child of the theater and she grew rich and famous by doing something she loved. On the road to success, she made a lot of wrong choices which left her single, with one perfect child, in her forties, remembering the relationships she screwed up and the other children she should have had. When she woke up after a plane crash, she realized she was being given a second chance to live the family life—she was suddenly married with three children.

As both women navigate the intricate web of the lives they never initially chose to live, they question whether achieving their dreams was worth losing everything else that they’ve ever held dear.

Two women. Two lives. An old friend’s promise fulfilled. A bedtime story. A black cat.

What are you willing to give up for that precious second chance?
